I recently had the honour of launching a book on the finding of HMAS Sydney (II). Nobody who visits the memorial at Mt Scott could fail to be moved by the bronze statue of a windswept, stoic woman anxiously scanning the horizon for her sailor's return. Geraldton residents had formed a bond with the Sydney sailors who had visited three times just before the ship went down, giving a concert for the school children, playing football and picnicking with the locals. The nation held its breath as teamwork, dedication, tenacity and experience finally led to the unravelling of the mystery of the ship's final resting place.
