After much lobbying by regional MPs such as Nigel Hallett and me, a unique new crop insurance is being offered to WA wheat and barley growers to cover the production cost of their total input for the current season. I hope this paves the way for other insurers to take an interest.
The Cost of Production cover is the first of its kind in Australia. With drought still causing anxiety it will provide an incentive to farmers to continue cropping and can be factored into their decision-making. At a time when morale has been low in some regions, it will also ease the pressure on many farming families.
