First nurse practitioner for country health program
The first nurse practitioner employed under the State Government’s $565million Southern Inland Health Initiative has been appointed to work in the Eastern Wheatbelt region.
Nurse practitioners are registered nurses who have completed a Master’s degree at university and have extensive clinical training which allows them to perform duties that complement the work of GPs.
The new appointee is a nurse practitioner with more than 30 years’ experience and will focus on assisting patients to manage chronic disease. The role is part of a partnership with Silver Chain Nursing Association, which has been contracted to provide the service.
The objective is to improve access to treatment, provide outreach services in rural and remote communities and provide mentorship and clinical expertise to other health professionals.
The Southern Inland region stretches from Kalbarri and Meekatharra in the north, to Laverton in the east, down to Esperance in the south-east.
Capital works in the new Health Initiative will include the upgrade of six district hospitals including Narrogin, Katanning, Northam, Merredin, Manjimup (Warren Hospital) and Collie.
