Major moves for Year 7 and Pre Primary students
Year 7 public school students will move to secondary schools in 2015, and pre-primary will become compulsory for all students in 2013.

The decisions are designed to give students the best chance to excel at the important transition times of entering primary school and entering secondary school.

Pre Primary
By making pre-primary compulsory, the State Government will ensure that all children of this age have access to a high-quality, full time program.

In that year of schooling children acquire the foundations of literacy and numeracy, and while current pre-primary enrolment rates exceed 97 per cent, this move will ensure not one child falls through the cracks.

All Western Australian children will be guaranteed a pre-primary place at their local school from the beginning of 2013.

When the new national curriculum is implemented, it will assume that all pre-primary children are attending school regularly.

Year 7
When the new national curriculum is implemented, greater demands will be placed on Year 7 students, particularly in maths and science.

Secondary school teachers specialise in these subjects, and students who move into secondary school at Year 7 will benefit from their expertise.

They will also have access to specialist facilities including well-equipped science labs.

These days Year 7 students are, on average, six months older than in the years before the school starting age was raised.
Approximately half are celebrating their 13th birthdays while still in primary school.
