Resource Centre Funding

Exciting new funding has been announced for WA Telecentre Network facilities, which are to be re-named Community Resource Centres to better reflect their role.

In the first phase of funding, $5million will be allocated this financial year.

In addition to a $10,000 immediate increase to the Operational Support Grant for each of the centres, the first phase of the new funding will include a one-off grant of up to $10,000 for minor refurbishment work and equipment upgrades. There will also be an immediate increase in funding available for community-based projects.

Another $1.3million of the money this financial year will enable the network to upgrade videoconferencing capabilities. This will make the network the largest community-owned video conferencing network in Australia.

Telecentres originated from moves to improve access to adult education for people living in remote and rural Western Australia. It soon became clear that the centres had the potential to deliver a wider range of government and community services.

Some of the serviced they now provide include:

   high-speed Internet access

   two-way 128kb videoconferencing facilities

   printing and photocopying services

   fax machines

   teaching and training facilities

   Westlink satellite services, and

government, community and business information and referral services.
