For many victims of crime it can be their first experience of the justice process. They may never have been near a court before, and may feel ‘lost in the system’.

This is especially difficult if they live in a remote area and find it difficult to access support and information.

A new Victim Support Website launched by Attorney General Christian Porter will give victims an overview of the services available to them so that, at the click of a computer mouse, they can access a more holistic approach to dealing with their circumstances.

The website brings together a range of information, support and services across Government and non-government organizations, and includes advice on medical care, reporting a crime, counselling and judicial processes. It is the first step in a line of improvements the Attorney General intends to introduce for victims of crime.

WA is far less advanced in the treatment of victims than some other States. This includes the ways in which victims of crime are compensated, the way they are represented in Government, and the way they are represented in the sentencing process. This Government is committed to improving the rights of victims in Western Australia.

As part of that commitment the Government is investigating how victims’ issues are being managed in other Australian States and considering the appropriateness of those strategies for WA. Any reforms will be the result of thorough consultation between WA’s Victims of Crime Reference Group and other Government and non-government organisations.

The website is located at: www.victimsofcrime.wa.gov.au
