Walebing-Bindi Highway Upgrade
A narrow 16 kilometre stretch of the Great Northern Highway between Walebing and Bindi Bindi has had a $33 million upgrade.
The Moora Primary School Choir (pictured) sang the National Anthem to start the ribbon-cutting ceremony, and wrapped it up with a spirited rendition of ‘Give me a Home Among the Gum Trees’.
As part of the upgrade project some artificial nesting hollows were installed. A favourite feathered guest at the ceremony was ‘Harmony’ from the Black Cockatoo Rehabilitation Centre (pictured sitting on the Last Post). Harmony was hit by a car and can’t fly so guests were able to have her sit on their shoulders.
This section of highway was identified by the road transport industry as the highest priority for upgrade with a very narrow seal, and trees close to the road on either side.
It was also a section with tight curves and steep crests, which led to fretting of the bitumen edge and large drop-offs to the gravel shoulder making vehicle-passing hazardous.
The improvements involved widening the road and realigning sections to allow vehicles to pass each other more safely and will also reduce travel times and highway congestion.
The road is part of the main land transport route for the agricultural, pastoral and mining industries between Perth and Darwin, and links northern parts of WA with Perth and the Port of Fremantle.
The upgrade is part of the Federal Government’s $98.1 million upgrade of the Muchea to Wubin section of the Great Northern Highway.
